HUNTING PARK WEST INDUSTRIAL AREA STUDY
This planning study is underway and is expected to be completed in late 2010. The Hunting Park West Industrial Area Study examines a 400-acre former industrial district located between Northwest Philadelphia and North Philadelphia. The study area is generally bounded by Hunting Park Avenue, the R-6 rail line, Route 1 (Roosevelt Expressway), and Clarissa Street. It comprises several large industrial properties including the former Budd Company and Tasty Baking Company. The district also includes the former Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (EPPI) property on Henry Avenue and the Salvation Army/ Kroc Community Center under construction on Wissahickon Avenue. Surrounding neighborhoods are Southwest Germantown, East Falls, Allegheny West, Tioga and Nicetown.

STUDY PURPOSE
The plan is needed to guide future land use and zoning in an area that is dominated by large vacant or obsolete industrial properties. There is also a need for a more detailed examination of the EPPI property which is partially occupied and contains a temporary residential facility for youth.

PLANNING PROCESS
The planning process began in September 2009. With funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, PCPC had issued a Request for Proposals for planning services. The winning bidder was a consultant team headed by Wallace, Roberts and Todd (WRT). The consultants are preparing the plan, while the larger planning process is managed by the staff of the Planning Commission (Jennifer Barr, Project Manager).

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Community outreach is being accomplished in two ways. First, an Advisory Committee has been established with membership comprised of community leaders and other stakeholders. To date, there have been four meetings of this committee. Second, larger public meetings were convened to obtain input from all concerned citizens. The first public meeting was held on January 7, 2010 at Mercy Vocational High School. The second public meeting took place on March 10, 2010 at Temple Health Systems, 2450 Hunting Park Ave.; and the final purlic meeting was held on May 19, 2010 at the Falls Center on Henry Ave.
